Traditionally, the African concept of the kitchen is, “a place for women’’. Something most of us living in this new age disagree with. With recent developments, technological advances and inter- cultural relations, kitchens, home décor and accessories have become full career paths. People actually go to college to learn how to arrange utensils, organize a bedsitter and so forth. Sounds crazy, right.

I knew very little about all these until I met one Mrs. Esther Mutoru of Ruby Granites & Interiors. A wonderful lady, ever jovial and with a keen eye for home décor and related accessories. The sales team comprises young and very dedicated men and women with thirst for knowledge; it made my work very satisfying and easy. The whole vibe has been an entire eye opener experience to a wonderful world of interior design options.

It was a Sunday afternoon the first time I visited the newly opened branch along Kijabe Street, Nairobi. ‘’My God!”, Exactly my reaction when I saw the wall brackets decorating the left wing of the building from the main entrance. The shop, a complete paradise for anyone who knows quality. An electrician was doing last minute installations in readiness for a new week of business.
Mrs Esther took me a on tour that left me speechless. Everything was in the right place, strategic and screaming literally, ‘’buy me’’. You immediately realize you’re spoiled for choice once you step in there.

One thing really got me thinking. In fact, it was a sort of a revelation. I realized at that very moment I had fallen head over heels for a complete kitchen set with built cabinets and a granite counter top to give that final exquisite look of finesse and class.
Granite comes mostly form India due to their indigenous environment and advanced mining-processing technology making India the biggest exporter. The best part about the counter tops is the wide variety of colors, dimensions and sizes. From Coffee Brown to Brown Pearl, Black Galaxy to the tantalizing Pure White; you are in for a treat.

Delightful in their humbling patterns, granite counter tops create an ambience of love and unimaginable tranquility. Suitability to the kitchen comes from the fact that granite is formed in intense heat and is naturally impervious to high temperatures hence hot pans or cooking pots cannot damage the surface. However, any sealant used in the installation process might be affected by high heat. It also doesn’t scratch so no more worries about the kids getting cheeky in the kitchen or any other place you decide to use granite countertops. The durability of the tough surface can be a menace especially on knives so I would highly recommend you investing a wood or plastic cutting board.

In my subsequent visits and follow ups, I have learned a lot from everyone at Ruby, making my love for granite even better. For those who hate the Nairobi CBD traffic and ‘kanjo’ shenanigans, there is a very big outlet along the Eastern Bypass, near Shell (formerly Engen). Ample parking, wonderful customer service and readily available assistance from the young men at the store. It is approximately 3 kilometers from Thika Super Highway, at the Miti Kenda stage on your way to Ruai.
I have been there severally and trust me, you will love the whole atmosphere. Next mission is to visit Nakuru and Kisumu showrooms.
